Hi,
Looking for, ideally, an un-finished Spondon Z1 project to buy. Hoping to start a build, and that as we all know, is usually a good place to start! Failing that I'm keen to source a frame and thought you chaps would be a good starting point...
Cheers
Al

There was on for sale a few months back but it ended up being broken and the frame sold on. Z1 copy Spondon frames are pretty rare, a lot of them went to Germany might be worth looking on the German Spondon websites/forums.

Hi, as it happens I think I might have struck lucky... I'm going over to Germany to check out a half built project. Pictures and info look good but I would be grateful if anyone could help with a couple of questions
1) How do I tell it IS a Spondon frame and not a copy? Is there an ID number or the like and if so what should it read like? 2) It has no paperwork so how do I go about registering it back here in the UK? The chap who worked at Spondon for many years now works at Race Fit and I was hoping to ask his advice but unable to contact him so far
Thanks in advance Al

Spondon should have a frame number SPE- stamped on the headstock. If you have photos, get in touch with Gavin at www.giaengineering.co.uk/ (he worked at spondon for many years) he should be able to help verify it. As for registering it in this you will need either a doner frame number or a letter to prove the date of manufacture to apply for an "Age related" numberplate. Hope this helps, Kyle

Hi Kyle,
Thanks for that, that's great help. I contacted Gavin and he has told me what to look for. As for the letter to prove date of manufacture, who/where should I get that from?
Cheers

Just had a very helpful conversation with DVLA...
Relevant forms are en route but they reckon I need to give them a rubbing and photo of the Vin number from the frame and a letter from an owners club or manufacturer to confirm it's authenticity to register the finished bike for an aged related plate. 1) Will the frame have a Vin number? 2) Can you guy's help with the letter?
Feeling hopeful but confused

Hi again, The frame will only have a Spondon number which could be used if you went down the SVA route to get a new registration. As for getting a letter to get age related plate, that way is pretty much gone as Spondon don't trade anymore and no one has been approved by DVLA to issue the relevant documentation. Easiest route is a doner frame and use the VIN off that, slightly dodgey but it works. Sorry that we can't help more.

Hi,
Thanks again, this is a great help. Need to make a decision this weekend so am trying to get as full a picture as poss. The slightly dodgey route you talk about, does the doner frame just need to be any frame that I am confident wont surface in the future? If it's from a Honda for example would I just say it's a Kawasaki engine in a Honda frame? Excuse the dumbness...
Cheers

Best get a frame from a Kawasaki and if possible same engine, that makes it a lot easier. Just transfer the frame number onto an alloy plate and get it welded onto the frame. Make sure you get the original frame aswell as the logbook and destroy the frame so that it cannot be used again.

Well, I now own a rather smart Spondon Z1... I will work out how to post pic ASAP Need to get to work as it still has a fair bit to do. Main thing is to get it registered, without a Q plate if poss. So if anyone know's of a suitable doner frame, I'm all ears

Hi. is your tank an original item or an alloy replica.
Std tanks do not fit my Z1 frame and I'm in the process of getting an alloy one made. Cheers

Yes spondon frame. Mine was 2nd hand from Germany as well but mine was a bare frame & never built. Although it has Z900 seat lock fittings, the hinges do not line up, and as far as I'm aware from Z1 to Z1000 they should be all the same, so not sure what's going on there. I've made up hinges to fit to solve that and I'm having the tank slightly longer, pushing the seat & tail back to try to give it a 'longer leaner' image.
If you want to send some pics of the seatr lock etc to(DELETED) I'll see if I can identify the frame. They did tend to build the frames to the parts you gave them, so if you wanted a mixture, then that's what you got.
Cheers
Gary
