Hi, I' a guy from Denmark, looking to buy a Spondon frame for my FZ750. it has the frame number: SPE-FZ750/A/289 Can any of you Experts tell me which year it is built? It is important for me to know, because it tells if it is legal to use for Classic racing.
Thanks Soren

I don't think they made many, do you have any pictures? I would think that it would be 1988/89 at the latest but without seeing if Stuart has the book with all the frames in it would be hard to say. I have one for an FZR1000 motor that is from 1987, it has milled sections where the cylinder head bolts on, is the one you are looking at like that? The ones that are normal beams are earlier than that but FZ's only came out in '85 so it could only be '85/ '86. Hope this helps, cheers, Steve

yeah, that's earlier than mine, must be 85/86 I'd say, I'll try and see if Stuart has the 'big book of Spondon knowledge' and find out for definite. What is the age limit on the class you're wanting to use it in?

It should be from 80' to 87' I hope that the spondon frame is lighter than the original steel frame ;-)

.....and he didn't buy it from a German seller. So I did and have almost finshed it. The bike has been in a biggish spill suffering some front and side damage. Luckily the frame suffered just a few scrapes to fairing mountings and some other minor rash but nothing serious. All the bodywork was wrecked so I search around and found Honda RS500 fairing and seat, presented them to the bike and with a little cut here and there and they fitted a treat. It seems that a number of Spondons from this period used RS500 bodywork, Tony Moran used the same on his 1986 Spondon FZ. I have repaired the frame lugs, fairing mounts and removed the tanks dents. Frame is now lightly polished and looking good. Also replaced the bearings in the shock linkages. I've sourced replacement parts for M1R's, yokes and clippons. Wheels have been crack tested, chromated and repainted in gold. Have sourced front hydraulics which could have been either Brembo 4 pot or AP 4 pot, I have gone for Brembo from 1984 works type. JUST NEED SPONDON FLOATING DISCS with Yamaha fittings, 50mm brake area depth and largish offset in 320 to 300mm please? Engine which "was" a 1987 FZR genesis is totally knackered, l/h piston broke up, gearbox which was a NOVA 6 speed close was destroyed :¬( and the barrel is shot but the head which is flowed is ok. CAMs are kit YEC. But have replaced the lot for a later FZR lump from 89 which is endurance race prepared with YEC kit FCR's, YZF cams and gearbox and YEC OW01 exhaust and gas flowed. Would still like to know who the chassis was originally purchased by? Looking at period pictures of Tony Moran's bike (1986 and 87 World F1TT bike) and the cycle parts which came with mine I am convinced that Spondon supplied my SPE/fz750/a/289 as a complete rolling chassis; many on the cycle parts including the damaged stuff is Spondon supply. In fact I may have Tony's bike but I can't be sure. I have been told that Spondon did supply FZ chassis only but I think this was the later type with the side engine mounts. Who knows, but it would be nice to know the bikes history.

Hi mate, sorry it's taken so long but my email went into Stuart's Span filter for some reason so he didn't see it. He phoned me today so I got him to have a look in his book. Your frame was originally bought by a German guy called Rudiger Festell (he thinks that what the surname is, he said it's hard to read Bob's writing!)in 1986. Other than that there was no other info I'm afraid, cheers, Steve
